Â
Redshirt freshman Dasia Evans is looking forward to taking the court with her teammates for the 2017-18 season and help lead Wright State women's basketball team in a competitive Horizon League.
Â
The six foot two inch forward from Richton Park, IL enjoyed practicing and watching the Raiders team last season, but is ready to get the experience of playing with her teammates in a game.Â
Â
'It was tough to wake up every day and work hard in practice, knowing I wasn't going to step on the court and be out there with my teammates," she said. "It made me mentally tough to buckle down and do what I had to do so I could be able to play next year."
Â
Dasia began playing basketball in fourth grade and realized that she had potential to become a division I athlete in middle school if she continued to work hard. Hustling on the court and being a leader is something that she takes pride in.
Â
"Whatever the situation is. If I'm doing good or if I'm doing bad, I hustle," she said. "You can't really go wrong with that."
Â
Evans gave credit to her mom, Deidre Evans, for encouraging her to work hard on and off of the court with an emphasis on education. At Rich South High School, Dasia played volleyball and ran track so she could stay in shape for basketball season. Her hard work and leadership skills were rewarded with team MVP honors for all three sports.
Â
"I think it shows I'm consistent," Evans said. "Being a leader no matter what I was doing, where I was at or what sport I was in."
Â
Dasia is a communications major at Wright State and chose the University because it felt like the team had a family environment on and off of the court.
Â
"Your team is really who you're with 24/7," Evans said. "They know your weaknesses and they know your strengths. As a team and family, they push you through your weakness to make it a strength."
Â
With dreams and goals of playing in the WNBA or over-seas, Dasia is inspired by Los Angeles Sparks forward Candice Parker.
Â
"She is a leader on and off of the court," Evans said. "She's everything that I want to be. I watch her and she can lead me to the right direction on how to get there."
Â
With the Raiders hosting Indianapolis at the Nutter Center on Wednesday, Nov 1 for an exhibition game, Dasia could get her first chance to showcase her talents in front of the Wright State fan base.
