The Wright State women's basketball team fought hard but came up short at #23 Missouri Thursday night 82-80. Chelsea Welch had a career-high 36 points.
First Quarter
Missouri scored first, but the Raiders stayed close as the Tigers took a 17-12 before WSU shot their way back in and took the lead 20-17 on a three pointer by Chelsea Welch. The Raiders led 22-20 at the buzzer. Welch led the way with nine points as Emily Vogelpohl had four points, three rebounds and three assists. Wright State shot 8-16 from the field, holding the Tigers to 44%.
Second Quarter
MU got back to tie the game as the Raiders went almost three minutes without scoring until taking the 34-30 lead on two free throws by Welch and a Mackenzie Taylor jumper. WSU jumped out to end the first half with a 42-35 lead. Welch added 12 points to increase her points to 21 in the first 20 minutes. Vogelpohl hit a three at the buzzer to bring her total to seven points to go with her six rebounds. Missouri finished the last 3:21 without scoring as both teams shot 41% from the field.
Third Quarter
Wright State grew the lead 48-38 until Mizzou came back with 11 unanswered points. The Raiders used a couple jumpers from Vogelpohl and strong defense to take the lead back at 59-53. That was followed by a free throw and two jumpers from Welch to push the score to 65-59 to end the quarter. Welch added 11 more points for 32 points on nine field goals and ten free throws. Vogelpohl has 14 points and eight boards.
Fourth Quarter
A Welch layup made the score 70-63 and gave her 34 points which is a new career high, eclipsing her 33 points against Detroit last year. A three-minute scoring drought brought MU back to 75-75 with just under four minutes to go. A three pointer from Taylor let WSU grab the lead back. Missouri tied the score at 78 with a pair of free throws and took the led on a jumper with 44 seconds to go. Symone Simmons tied it on a layup at 27 seconds remaining but was called for her fifth foul with one second on the clock. Mizzou hit two free throws to win the game 82-80.
Welch finished with her career-best 36 points as Vogelpohl had 14 points and nine rebounds, Simmons added 13 points and Taylor finished with 10.
Welch's 36 points was also the most since KC Elkin had 37 against Valparaiso in March 8, 2014 and most by a Raider on the road since Kim Demmings' 36 at Oakland on February 18, 2014.
