Women Defeat Butler 76-71

Box Score

The Wright State women's basketball team posted its highest point total of the season Saturday afternoon as the Raiders recorded a 76-71 decision over the Butler Bulldogs in Horizon League action at the Nutter Center.

WSU led by four after a Sierra Crayton three-point play, but Butler followed with seven straight points, three each from Susan Lester and Jackie Closser, to go up 21-18 with 6:07 remaining in the first half.

The Raiders, however, answered with nine unanswered of their own, five of those by Tyanda Hammock, to regain the advantage at 27-21. Wright State maintained the edge the rest of the half and took a 30-25 halftime lead on a Danielle Duncan foul shot at the 1:12 mark.

Butler drew to within one on three occasions in the initial five minutes of the second half, but Wright State responded each time and led 52-45 after a Brittney Whiteside jumper with 11:57 left to play. The Bulldogs, though, rallied from there with a 10-3 burst over the next three minutes, six of those from Lester.

Wright State, however, went back in front to stay on a Kanisha Ward three and the advantage grew to 66-57 following baskets by Whiteside and Whitney Lewis.

A Closser cut the margin to 68-64 with just under two minutes remaining, but the Raiders sealed the win on two Lewis foul shots followed by a Steph Comisar three from the top of the key.

The 76 points are the most for WSU in a game this season, eclipsing the 68 scored in the opener at Ball State on November 18.

Wright State shot 48 percent overall, 52 percent in the second half, and was seven of 18 from three-point range while the Bulldogs hit for 43 percent for the game, 46 percent the final 20 minutes, but were just five of 24 from behind the arc.

All nine Raiders on the active roster scored, led by Whiteside's near double-double of 17 points and nine rebounds along with five assists. Hammock added 15, Crayton 11 and Comisar and Lewis nine each.

Lester paced Butler (5-9, 2-1 Horizon) with 15 off the bench while Closser had 13, Cassie Freeman 11 and Lade Akande 10.

Wright State, now 4-10 and 2-1 in the Horizon League, continues the homestand next week with two more Horizon League games, hosting Loyola on Thursday, January 11, at 7:00, followed by UIC on Saturday, January 13, at 1:00.
