Box Score Wright State led much of the game, but Cleveland State had the advantage when it counted most as a three by Kevin Francis with 12 seconds left gave the Vikings a 65-63 win over the Raiders in Horizon League men's basketball action at the Nutter Center Saturday night.
The Raiders jumped out to a 16-3 lead seven minutes into the contest, including a pair of Todd Brown three-pointers and was still up 31-19 following a Vaughn Duggins layup with 4:22 left in the half. Cleveland State, however, followed with a 12-3 run before two Will Graham foul shots made it 36-31 at the break.
A pair of baskets by J'Nathan Bullock helped CSU tie the game at 37 at the 16:56 mark and neither team had more than a five-point lead the rest of the way. A Cedric Jackson jumper gave the Vikings a 62-60 edge, only to see Brown connected on a jumper in the lane to tie the game again with 2:09 left.
Duggins hit one of two foul shots at the 25.3-second mark to make it 63-62, but Francis made what turned out to be his game-winning three from the right of the top of the circle with 12 seconds remaining.
The Raiders shot 54 percent from the field, including seven of 11 from three-point range, compared to 40 percent for Cleveland State, but the Vikings made up the difference with 21 more attempts thanks to a 34-24 rebounding advantage, 21-7 on the offensive end. CSU led in points in the paint (30-22), points off of turnovers (19-13) and second-chance points (25-8).
Duggins led the way for the Raiders with 18 ponits while Pleiman and Brown each had 15.
Bullock paced Cleveland State (12-5, 5-0 Horizon) with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds while Joe Davis added 10 off the bench. Overall, 10 Vikings scored as their bench outscored the Raider reserves 34-4.
Wright State, now 9-6 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League, heads to the Windy City next weekend for a pair of games, taking on UIC on Thursday, January 17, and Loyola on Saturday, January 19, both at 8:00 Eastern.
