A Bekah Bonny goal at the 29 minute mark of the first half gave the Wright State women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Loyola in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Bonny's goal, her third of the season, came on an assist by Brittany Persaud, giving her 10 assists on the year. The 10 assists tie a school record for the most in a season, tying her with Sharon Roscoe, who set the mark in 2001.
Loyola finished with a 16-7 shot advantage, including a 14-1 differential in the second half, but goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy preserved the shutout, the first of her career, in recording eight saves.
Wright State (11-8) now advances to the semifinals on Friday, November 5, at 1:00 as the Raiders take on #2 seed Milwaukee (10-6-2) at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis. The second semifinal at 3:30 will have #1 seed Butler (8-10) facing #6 seed Detroit (8-6-5), who defeated #3 Cleveland State 2-1 in another first-round contest on Saturday. The championship is set for Sunday, November 7, at 1:00, again at the Butler Bowl, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
