Box Score 2 The Wright State softball team dropped a pair of games in the opening day of the Winthrop Invitational Saturday in Rock Hill, South Carolina, falling to Connecticut 6-1 and Winthrop 5-4.
In the opener, UConn scored a run in the first and it stayed that way until the Raiders tied it in the fifth. Hanna Floyd led off with a walk and after bunts by Kortney Tackett and Kacie Rapshus advanced her to third, Floyd scored on a hit by pinch-hitter Libby Pfeffer.
The Huskie offense, however, came alive in the sixth as Connecticut batted around and scored five times, including a pair of two-run doubles form Alyson Ambler and Alyssa Gardea.
Krystian DeWitt pitched the first five innings for WSU, allowing just one run on four hits.
In the second game, Winthrop built a 4-0 advantage with two runs in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth before Wright State answered with two in the sixth. With two outs and no one on base, Pfeffer reached on an error and went to second on a Becka Peterson single. Floyd then doubled in pinch-runner Kate Pfeffer and after Tackett walked, Taylor Knore was hit by a pitch to force in the second run.
The Eagles made it 5-2 with a run in the bottom of the sixth before the Raiders put together a rally in the seventh. With one out, Jess Gorman smacked a solo home run to left and after back-to-back hits from Reagan Stofcheck and Libby Pfeffer, Becka Peterson reached on an error to make it 5-4.
WSU, however, could not push the tying run across.
Wright State (1-12) wraps up tournament play on Sunday morning with two games, taking on Marist at 9:00 followed by Eastern Kentucky at 11:00.
