@WSUVBall Upsets Northern Kentucky 3-2

Sunday afternoon, the Wright State volleyball team made it two straight with a win over Northern Kentucky at home 3-2 by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 21-25, 17-15.  It was the first Raider win over NKU since Oct. 6, 2015.  The Raiders are now 11-9 and 3-5 while the Norse fall to 13-6 and 5-3.

Teddie Sauer had an excellent all-around match with 19 kills, four aces, 11 digs and three blocks while Mallory Ladd continued her good play with 16 kills.  Also in double digit kills were Alannah Lemming with 13 and Celia Powers with 11.  Taylor Gibson chipped in eight much-needed kills as well.  Freshman Lainey Stephenson posted her career-best 60 assists while Jenna Story ended with 31 digs.  WSU hit .204 overall with sets of .361 and .406.

First Set
The Raiders took the win 25-22 after a close set that saw WSU pull away 22-18 before taking the victory.  Sauer led the way with six kills and two service aces as Ladd, who had 17 kills at IUPUI Friday, continued her hot hand with four kills.  Gibson had three while Stephenson collected 16 assists.  WSU hit .361.


Second Set
Wright State jumped out to a 6-2 lead that caused NKU to use a timeout.  Northern closed the gap but with WSU went up 17-13, resulting in the the Norse using their second timeout.  The Raiders went onto win 25-19.  Ladd posted five kills with Lemming coming on strong with four kills and two blocks.  Stephenson picked up 13 more assists as the Raiders hit .406.

Third Set
As the Raiders jumped to a 9-5 lead, the Norse were forced to call another timeout.  NKU tied the score at 15 and took the lead 18-15, which caused WSU to take its first timeout of the match.  Northern went onto win 25-17.  The Raiders got three kills from Ladd and Sauer with Story credited with eight digs.

Fourth Set
Another tight set as WSU went up 6-4 but NKU came back to lead 13-9 and 18-14.  Wright State crept back to 22-20 but Northern took the set 25-21 to even the match.  Wright State hit .156 and received four kills Ladd, Sauer and Lemming.   Story finished with 10 digs and Stephenson had 14 assists.

Fifth Set
The score was tight at the start, but WSU took a 5-3 lead.  NKU collected the next three points until Lemming hammered home a point to tie it.  WSU had an 8-7 lead as the teams changed benches.  With Northern tying the score at nine, the Raiders went back up 11-9 to cause an NKU timeout.  WSU came out to take the lead 12-10, but Northern Kentucky tied it at 12.  The score bounced back and forth until the Raiders nailed the set, and match win 17-15.  Powers picked five kills to hit .500 with five digs while Sauer had four kills with two important aces, including the match winner.

The Raiders will hit the road for matches at UIC Friday at 7 pm and at Milwaukee Saturday at 5 pm.  Friday will be shown on ESPN3 and Saturday on ESPN+.
