@WSUVball Takes Close Loss to UConn

The Wright State volleyball team opened its 2018 schedule under new head coach Allie Matters Friday afternoon with a close loss 3-2 against Connecticut in the West Virginia Invitational.

First Set
The Raiders took the first set 25-22 as Abby Barcus led with six kills and a .556 hitting percentage. Freshman Lainey Stephenson had seven assists while Hannah Colvin posted three digs.  Celia Powers and Teddie Sauer each had three kills to help the team to a .346 hitting percentage.  Neither team led by more than three points through the set as the score seesawed back and forth.

Second Set
The second was even more tight with largest lead of just two by either team, featuring 13 ties and seven lead changes. The Raiders had eight kills, hitting just .111 while the Huskies hit .137.  Barcus added three kills while Veerle van Oosterom again came off the bench to add to register four more assists for a two-set total of nine.

Third Set
The Raiders came back to win the third set 25-22 but it wasn't easy as UConn was able to hang close throughout.  WSU was up 22-18 and the Huskies reeled off four straight points coming out of a timeout.  Barcus continued to pace the offense with three more kills as the Raiders hit only .077 in the win,  Defense held up its end, posting 45 digs and 13 total blocks for the first three sets.

Fourth Set
The Huskies jumped to a 6-2 lead, and didn't look back, winning 25-19.  The Raiders could only close the gap to two points during the set.  Barcus had 14 kills after the fourth set as Sauer posted 11 through four.  WSU hit .073 as the Raider now had 66 digs in the four sets.

Fifth Set
UConn once again jumped out to a lead 7-1 and 14-7 but the Raiders didn't give up narrowing the lead to a final 15-11. Two Raiders ended the match in double-digit kills with Barcus at 14 and Sauer at 11.  Stephenson led with 19 assists while van Oosterom posted 16.  Three Raiders were in double-figure digs with Colvin leading the way with 19 as Alannah Lemming had eight block assists and one solo.  WSU hit .132 for the game while the Huskies hit .166.

Next Up
Play continues in the West Virginia Invitational as the Raiders take on Georgia Southern at 4:30 Friday.  Both teams will enter the match at 0-1.
