The Wright State volleyball team jumped off to a quick start in the unique spring 2021 season with 3-0 win in Milwaukee, their first win at the home of the Panthers in 24 seasons. The Raiders finished the 2019 season with 12 sweeps in their 24 overall victories.
Â
The Raiders' last win over Milwaukee inside the Klotsche Center had been November 9, 1996, a 3-1 win, prior to Monday night's victory.
Â
Wright State and Milwaukee will turn around and face each other again on Tuesday as part of the Horizon League's scheduling model playing the same opponent at the same site on back-to-back days. Tuesday's match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET and will be streamed on ESPN+.
Â
Wright State controlled the majority of the night, as each of the first two sets had only one lead change per set and just five total ties. The eventual deciding third set was back-and-forth with 14 ties and five lead changes before the Raiders closed out the sweep.
Â
Teddie Sauer paced the offensive attack with eight kills, followed by six kills each from
Celia Powers and
Sam Wolf. Sauer and Powers each had five kills at the net to lead all players, while
Nyssa Baker added three blocks of her own. The Raiders had seven service aces – three from Powers, two from Sauer and one each from
Samantha Ott and
Callie Martin – and finished with a 65 percent sideout percentage in the win.
Â
Lainey Stephenson passed out 26 assists, the same amount as Milwaukee finished with as a team, while
Jenna Story had a game-high 16 digs for the Raiders.
Â
Set 1
The visiting Raiders came out firing, jumping out to a quick 8-3 advantage with three kills from Sauer to force a Milwaukee timeout. Wright State pushed the lead to 20-16 behind four kills from Powers and a service ace from Sam Ott. Following a second Panther timeout, the Raiders closed out the set with kills from Sauer and
Sam Wolf, along with a couple attacking errors from Milwaukee.
Â
Set 2
After Milwaukee scored the opening two points of the set, the Raiders responded to take a 10-5 lead behind a pair of kills from
Megan Alders and Powers to force a Panther timeout. Wright State then scored seven of the next nine points to go up 17-7 and force Milwaukee to use its second timeout. The hosts were never able to cut the gap any closer than six from there, with Wright State kills by Ott, Stephenson and Sauer before the set ended on a Wolf kill.
Â
Set 3
A back-and-forth set, both sides traded points before a Wright State timeout was called down 9-11. The Raiders responded with kills from Baker, Powers and Sauer but the match remained tied until another Baker kill gave Wright State a 18-17 advantage and then later extended the lead to 21-19. Milwaukee recorded three late errors to bring the Raiders to the brink before a kill from Sauer and a service ace from Powers ended the night.
