Raiders take walk-off win against Ohio State

DAYTON – The Wright State baseball team defeated Ohio State University 14-13 with a walk-off single by Julian Greenwell on Tuesday afternoon. The Raiders are now 22-18 overall, and will continue playing at home in a three-game series against Purdue Fort Wayne, beginning Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28. The Raiders finished with 14 runs on nine hits with eight walks against their six strikeouts. Greenwell led the team with three hits, tallying four RBI, and was closely trailed by Jay Luikart, Sammy Sass, and Boston Smith each recording two hits. Greenwell accounted for two of the four Wright State extra-base hits, with one double and a home run. Alongside him were Sass and Smith, each adding one homer on the day. Greenwell and Dane Thomas both recorded one sacrifice hit, and Carson Clark had one sacrifice fly.
 
Wright State took an initial lead, putting up four runs in the first three innings. OSU was the first to add a run to the board, with a double in the top of the first. The Raiders returned with three runs in the bottom of the first, coming as Sass singled and Luikart reached on a walk, for Smith to record a three-RBI homer to left field, taking a 3-1 lead. The Raiders added their fourth run, raising their advantage to three in the bottom of the third, as Greenwell reached on a hit by pitch, advancing to second on a wild pitch, and was sent home by a Luikart RBI-single.
 
The Buckeyes gained the lead in the top of the fourth, putting up a grand slam homer, 5-4. OSU raised their advantage to five in the top of the fifth, adding an RBI-walk and RBI-hit by pitch, followed by scoring on a fielder's choice and then on an RBI groundout, 9-4. The Raiders were swift to regain the lead with an eight-run bottom of the fifth. The fifth inning rally began with Sass hitting a two-RBI homer to left field after Greenwell reached on a double. The bases were loaded after Vore, Smith, then Andrew Patrick reached on walks for Patrick Fultz and Manley to record RBI-walks. Clark tied the game with a sacrifice fly, allowing Patrick to score. The Raiders took a three-run lead as Greenwell recorded a three-RBI homer to right field, taking a 12-9 lead.
 
OSU fought hard, taking the game to one run in the top of the seventh, scoring on two RBI walks. The game stayed close through the eighth inning, with neither team adding a hit until the ninth. The Buckeyes tied the game with an RBI ground out, taking the lead 13-12 with a sacrifice fly. But the day was not over for Wright State, as Patrick first reached on a walk, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Thomas. Clark reached base on a throwing error, advancing to second for Patrick to score, tying the game at 13. A first-pitch single to left field by Greenwell allowed Clark to score, taking the 14-13 walk-off win.
 
Chris Gallagher (2-1) earned the win after entering to pitch the final one third inning, allowing no runs or hits and leaving two Buckeyes on base. Starting pitcher Griffen Paige put in three innings on the mound, allowing one run on two hits with one walk while striking out two batters. Garrett Peters notably entered in the fourth to put in two and two third innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and striking out two batters.  
 
Buckeyes closer Justin Eckhardt (0-2) was charged with the loss after entering to pitch the ninth, allowing the game tying and winning runs, with one hit and one walk. Finishing with 13 runs on 12 hits with 14 walks against their six strikeouts, OSU was led by Henry Kaczmar and Joseph Mershon, each recording two hits and two RBI.
