Wright State Wins on Freeman Buzzer Beater
Senior Tyson Freeman has been there before. Two years ago, the Toledo, OH native hit the winning three pointer to beat conference rival UW-Green Bay. This time he grabbed a deflected in-bound pass with less than two seconds to play and casually bounced the ball off the backboard from halfcourt to seal Wright State University men's basketball win over Akron 78-75 at WSU's Nutter Center. The game was the season opener for both teams.
The see-saw game had the Raiders leading much of the game but the Zips always stayed close enough. WSU led at halftime 35-34 with their largest lead of seven points coming with 6:58 to go. In fact, the Zips final lead of the game came at 11:11 remaining in the first half at 19-16.
"This was an excellent college basketball games and my hat is off to Akron; they played very well and should challenge for the MAC title this year," WSU head coach Ed Schilling said. "I think we played very well also. Vernard (Hollins) has become a more complete player while Seth (Doliboa) shows he has worked hard in the summer. It's great to see hard work pay off like this."
Senior Vernard Hollins led the Raiders with 30 points, a career high, nine rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes. Junior Seth Doliboa popped in 20 points and six rebounds in 29 minutes. WSU shot 54% from the field and forced 17 Akron turnovers.
Akron wasled by Derrick Tarver with 24 points while Darryl Peterson added 21 points. The Zips shot 57% from the field and outrerbounded WSU 27-26.
WSU is now 1-0 and UA is 0-1. The Raiders will host Cedarville University Tuesday night at 7 pm.
