Carl Clayton, an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University, has accepted the position of assistant
women's basketball coach at Wright State University, announced Raider head coach Bridgett Williams today.
Clayton will serve as recruiting coordinator and will also work with other facets of the basketball program, including scouting, practice, camps, academics and player development.
Before coaching last season at Southern Illinois, Clayton was head coach at Blackburn College for two years. In his second year with the Battlin' Beavers, he coached the team to a 15-9 overall record
and a 10-4 conference mark, good for second place.
Clayton also gained experience working as an assistant coach at both Saint Louis University (1998-99) and the University of Missouri-St. Louis (1997-98) prior to going to Blackburn. While at SLU, he helped coordinate team travel, assist with on-campus recruiting visits and on-floor coaching and monitor student-athletes' academic progress in addition to other responsibilities.
At UMSL, he served as the team's recruiting coordinator, conducted pre-game and post-game strategy lectures and film breakdown, and planned camps along with fundraising events.
In addition to his accomplishments on the basketball court, Clayton also brings a solid administrative and teaching background to Wright State. He has worked as a physical education instructor for three years and held such positions as Community Youth Coordinator, Event Manager and Analyst.
"I am excited to have Carl as part of our coaching staff," said Williams. "He is a bright, young coach with a great future. His experiences on and off the court will be an immediate asset to our program."
Clayton, 32, earned both his undergraduate (Food and Nutrition, 1993) and master's degree (Physical Education, 1995) at Southern Illinois. He and his wife, Plesetta, have two children, Collin (4) and Pierce (2).
The regular-season opener for the Raiders is on Friday, November 22, as Wright State travels to defending national champion Connecticut.
