Former Wright State baseball player Chris Tuttle, who signed with the Washington Wild Things of the independent Frontier League on June 15 after being an undrafted free agent, was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals organization Monday.
Tuttle played in five of the six games on the Wild Things' road trip last week, hitting .348 (8 for 23) with five RBI and two runs scored. The outfielder was four-for-seven in his last two games.
"I'm glad that Chris is getting this opportunity," said former major league pitcher Kent Tekulve, who is now director of baseball operations for the Wild Things. "Even though his stay with the Wild Things was a short one, we take pride in the fact that we were able to be a part of his moving on to an affiliated organization, which is our goal for all of our players. We wish him nothing but the best."
Tuttle, who will be assigned to New Jersey of the Class A New York Penn League, earlier this year set a new Wright State record for hits in a career with 302. After leading Division I in batting average at .478 as a sophomore with a school record 97 hits, Tuttle posted a career .374 average for the Raiders with 172 runs scored, 114 RBI, 64 stolen bases and 44 doubles.
Tuttle is the second WSU player this season to sign a minor league contract as junior pitcher Casey Abrams was drafted in the fifth round by Seattle and signed a contract with the Mariners last week.
