Marlene Stollings, an assistant coach at New Mexico State the past three seasons, has accepted the position of assistant women's basketball coach at Wright State University, Raider head coach Bridgett Williams announced today.
Stollings will work with all facets of the basketball program, including recruiting, scouting, practice, camps, academics and player development.
During the 2001-02 season at New Mexico State, the Aggies set a NCAA record for three-pointers made in a game with 21 and finished second nationally in threes per game at 8.41. She also served as interim head coach for 12 games last year, posting a 9-3 record and leading the Aggies to first place in the Sun Belt Conference's West Division.
Prior to joining the New Mexico State staff, Stollings spent one season as an assistant at Jacksonville University, where the Dolphins set school records for overall and conference wins along with conference finish.
Stollings played at Ohio State as a freshman and sophomore before transferring to Ohio University for the 1996-97 season where she completed her eligibility the following year.
As a senior at Ohio in 1997-98, Stollings was voted team captain by her teammates. She earned first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors after finshing ninth in the nation and leading the league in scoring (22.9 ppg). Against Robert Morris on December 30, 1997, Stollings set a Bobcat record with 41 points and also hit a school-record 10 three-point baskets. Stollings also helped the Bobcats set a school record with seven consecutive wins en route to a 17-11 mark during the 1997-98 season. She also earned honorable mention Kodak
All-America honors.
Stollings had an outstanding prep career at Beaver Eastern High School, finishing as the leading scorer in the history of Ohio high school basketball, boys or girls, with 3,514 points. As a senior, Stollings was named Ohio's Miss Basketball and was presented a resolution by both the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives for her academic and athletic achievement. Her 1,022 points that year is the second-highest single-season scoring total in state history for girls basketball. In her honor, February 19, 1993, was declared Marlene Stollings' Day in Pike County and, earlier this year, she was inducted in the Ohio Girls Basketball Magazine Hall of Fame.
Before joining the Jacksonville coaching staff, she played one year of professional basketball with Club Abb Baden of Baden, Switzerland. After returning from overseas, she was invited and participated in the 1999 training camp for the Utah Starzz of the WNBA.
Off the court, Stollings was a two-time Scholar Athlete at Ohio State in 1994-95, while earning Ohio University Almuni Scholar Athlete Citation and Dean's List honors in 1996. Stollings earned a B.A. in marketing and a B.S. in sport industry from Ohio Univeristy in 1998.
Wright State posted an 11-17 overall record last season, their best since 1995-96, and their 8-8 Horizon League mark was their best ever in conference play.
