Six to be Inducted in WSU Hall of Fame
The Wright State University athletics department has announced the selection of five former student-athletes who will be inducted into the Al and Mary Schwarz Athletic Hall of Fame on June 5, during a banquet at the Hope Hotel.
Those to be inducted include Mike Mathile (baseball), Mark Myton (men's soccer), Chris Hawker (women's soccer/softball), Rick Hayhow (men's swimming) and Tim O'Neal (golf). Former basketball player Mark Woods, who was selected last year, will join the group for his formal induction to the hall.
Mathile, a former professional player in the Montreal Expos and Cincinnati Reds organizations, pitched for the Raiders from 1988-90 and currently ranks in the top five all time in wins (25) and strikeouts (203). After his final season at WSU, the Dayton-area native held a career ERA of 2.73, which was second best ever at that time and is currently fifth best. During his three years, he helped guide the Raiders to a 114-48 record, including 45 wins in 1989.
Myton played for the Raider soccer team from 1980-84 and was selected as the school's first All-American for soccer in 1981. In 1982, the midfielder was chosen All-Ohio and All-Mideast. His 83 games started still ranks as the second most ever for a Raider.
Hawker starred in both women's soccer and softball in the late 1980's. In soccer, she is currently second in goals (31), sixth in assists (15) and tied for second in total points with 77. She was the team MVP in 1990 and recipient of the squad's Raider Award in 1989 and 1990. In softball, the Dayton-area native had a career batting average of .309 with 51 RBI's and 49 stolen bases. Her best season was 1990 when she hit .393.
Hayhow earned 12 All-American honors from 1984-88, second most in school history. He also set school records in the 50 and 100 freestyle and was part of the record-setting teams in the 400 and 800 free relays. He won the team's most improved award in 1984 as a freshman and the squad's Raider Award in 1987.
O'Neal has the fine distinction of being the first WSU athlete to compete in an Division I national tournament when he qualified after finishing as the runner-up in the Division II Tournament in 1979. That same year, he was selected as a third-team All-American and led the Raiders to a fourth place showing nationally. Named the team MVP in 1979, he averaged 77.7 in 21 rounds.
Woods, a member of the men's basketball team 1989-93, was elected last year but was unable to attend the ceremony. He currently sits as the school's 16th all-time scorer and is the all-time steals and assists leader.
There are now 48 members in the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame, which began in 1985. Tickets to the banquet are available to the public for $25.00. Reservations can be made by contacting Paul Newman at (937) 775-2804.
