At its annual banquet at the Hope Hotel Sunday, Wright State University honored student-athletes and staff with various awards of recognition.
The Don Mohr Male Athlete of the Year was given to baseball player Joe Smith who went 3-0 with 12 saves during the season and helped lead his team to the NCAA Tournament. The Peg Wynkoop Female Athlete of the Year was given to Amy Cron (left photo) of the swimming team who led her team to a second place finish by winning the 100 fly and 100 back and helped two relay teams place third. Don Mohr was the school's first athletic director and Peg Wynkoop was the school's first senior woman administrator.
The Dr. Carl Benner Male and Female Scholar-Athlete Awards went to Alex Gutman and Audra Beckett. Gutman (middle photo), a junior runner from Botkins, Ohio, has posted a 4.0 grade point average in Mathematics while competing in seven of the eight competitions in the fall. Beckett (right photo), a junior from Hamilton, Ohio, posted a 20-16 singles mark for the tennis team while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average in Political Science. This award has been named after Dr. Carl Benner who was chair of the Athletic Council and long-time official scorer for the basketball team.
The Terry Hall WSU Coach of the Year award was presented to baseball coach Rob Cooper who led his team to a 32-25 regular season mark and the NCAA Tournament. WSU was a three seed in the recent Horizon League Tournament and outscored their opponents 52-5 in a four-game sweep for the championship. The award is named in honor of former women's basketball coach Terry Hall, who passed away in 1997.
The department's Angelo "Tony" Tononi Raider Award, given to someone who has contributed above and beyond, was presented to Paul Newman who is retiring after 21 years of service as the Sr. Associate Athletics Director at WSU. This award has been named after Tony Tononi, a friend and booster who passed away four years ago.
