It was a tough opening day for the Wright State softball team Friday as the Raiders dropped two games at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas. WSU fell to Cal State Northridge 8-0 and Southern Utah 16-2.
The Wright State offense could not get on track against Northridge pitcher Amanda Pitzenberger, who did not give up a hit in a complete-game effort with seven strikeouts. The only Raider baserunner was Michelle Logan, who walked with two outs in the sixth.
WSU, though, trailed just 2-0 until the Matadors broke the game open with three runs in both the fifth and sixth.
In the second game of the day, Southern Utah scored six in the top of the first, but the Raiders answered in their half of the frame as Jherica Williams was hit by a pitch and, two outs later, Allison Cox smacked a two-run homer to left.
The Thunderbirds, however, tacked on six more in the second, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to win going away.
Wright State continues play in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic Saturday with two more games, taking on Oregon State at noon and Cal Poly at 6:00 (Both times Eastern).
