Men and Women Sit Atop League Leaderboard After Day 1
2/21/2007 12:00:00 PM | Swimming & Diving
The Wright State men's and women's swimming and diving teams are each in first place after the first day of competition at the Horizon League Championships. Each squad posted a win in the 1000 free and the men's team posted second place finishes in each relay at the UIC Natatorium in Chicago.
The Raiders struck in the third event of the evening when Catalina Martinez posted a win in the 1000 yard Freestyle. Martinez battled with Green Bay's Molly Cox throughout the race, taking the lead for good on the 10th lap. Martinez posted a time of 10:18.56 to claim the victory.
On the men's side, the Raiders placed first and second in the 1000 yard Freestyle event. Scott Lang edged out teammate Will Ehresman by three seconds to claim the title. Lang finished with a time of 9:27.57, just ahead of the 9:24.91 time posted by Ehresman. After Cleveland State's Bjorn Schantz finished third in the race, Nathan Demchuk placed fourth. He was the third Raiders to finish and posted a time of 9:30.38.
Those were the only events the Raiders posted victories in, but a slew of other participants placed on day one of the championships.
Day two of the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships will start on Thursday morning at 10:30.
