The Wright State softball team jumped out to an early lead in both games as the Raiders opened the home portion of their schedule Tuesday with a pair of wins over crosstown rival Dayton, defeating the Flyers 4-2 in the opener and 9-5 in the nightcap.
WSU tallied a run in the first inning of the first game as Jherica Williams led off with a single to right center, stole second, went to third on a bunt from Briauna Birl and scored on a wild pitch.
The Raiders added three unearned runs in the third as two came in on a dropped fly ball and the final run on a RBI single down the right field line by Kristen Farley.
Dayton scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, but Allison Cox picked up her first save of the season by pitching two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out two. Jamie Perkins (3-4) earned the win as she gave up five hits and one walk in five innings while fanning three.
Wright State again scored a run in the first inning in game two and again it was Williams who got things started with a walk. Birl then laid down a bunt that was thrown away into right field as Williams scored.
WSU added two more in the second on a wild pitch and another throwing error and extended the lead to 5-0 an inning later as Kristen Bradshaw hit her second home run of the season to left and Bridget Henry followed with a RBI single to left center.
The margin grew to 8-1 in the fourth on Mary Jane D'Arcy's solo home run down the left field line, her first of the season and second of her Raider career, a RBI ground out by Cox and a double to left center off the bat of Dani Philen.
UD (3-9) closed the gap to 8-5 with four in the fifth, but managed just one base runner the final two innings against Perkins in relief. The Raiders closed out the scoring in the sixth as D'Arcy scored on a wild pitch.
Cox (5-6) picked up the second game win while, on offense, D'Arcy, Bradshaw and Perkins each had two hits and scored twice.
Wright State, now 8-10 on the season, returns to action this weekend at the Mercer Nissan Invitational in Macon, Georgia. The Raiders face Winthrop at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 23, followed by host Mercer at 3 p.m.
