The Wright State softball team scored in all but two innings the entire day as the Raiders swept the IPFW Mastodons Wednesday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field, winning 11-0 in five innings in the opener and 10-2 in six innings in the nightcap.
WSU wasted little time in taking control of game one, scoring three times in the first on an Allison Cox RBI single through the left side and a two-run hit up the middle off the bat of Kristen Farley. A bunt single from Briauna Birl in the second drove in Jherica Williams and Wright State added another run in the frame as Kristen Bradshaw connected on her fourth home run of the season to straight away center.
The margin grew to 6-0 in the third on a Patti Scherer hit and the Raiders tacked on five more in the fourth as Erica Schroeder's double along with a Mastodon error resulted in three runs followed by another Scherer RBI and one from Michelle Logan.
Jamie Perkins (5-8) was nearly perfect as she retired the first 12 batters she faced before giving up a lead-off single in the fifth. That runner, however, was erased on a ground ball double play and the next batter followed with another grounder to end the game. Perkins finished with three strikeouts.
Birl, Bradshaw, Farley and Schroeder each had two hits in the first game with Bradshaw, Cox and Schroeder scoring twice.
IPFW took a 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning of game two, but the Raiders answered with three in the bottom of the frame as Cox scored on a wild pitch and Logan later had a two-run single to left center.
Wright State tacked on a run in the third and two more in the fifth thanks to a two-out hit up the middle by Malerie Klingler. The Raiders then forced the run-rule with four in the sixth, keyed by a bases-loaded triple off the bat of pinch-hitter Ashley Davis.
Cox (6-6) picked up the win as she allowed no earned runs and five hits while striking out one. Danielle Philen paced the WSU offense with two hits and two runs scored while Bradshaw and Jacqueline Macy also scored twice.
Wright State, now 11-14 on the season, begins Horizon League play this weekend as the Raiders host Butler for a three-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31, at 1:00. Saturday's first game will be video streamed on a delayed basis on wsuraiders.com that evening at 7:00.
