At its annual Academic and Athletic Recognition Banquet at the Hope Hotel Sunday, Wright State University honored student-athletes and staff with various awards of recognition.
The Don Mohr Male Athlete of the Year was given to basketball player DaShaun Wood, who was the Horizon League Player of the Year, Tournament MVP and Honorable Mention All-American as he led his team to the NCAA Tournament. The Peg Wynkoop Female Athlete of the Year was given to Steph Comisar as she was named Second Team All-Horizon League and Third Team All-Great Lakes Region as a goalkeeper for the soccer team and averaged 8.4 points per game for the basketball team. Don Mohr was the school's first athletic director and Peg Wynkoop was the school's first senior woman administrator.
For the first time in school history, The Dr. Carl Benner Male and Female Scholar-Athlete Awards went to more than three student-athletes in a year as five received the honor in Alex Gutman, Audra Beckett, Tara Geegan, Whitney Lewis and Jessica Weidert, all with perfect 4.0 grade point averages.
Gutman, a senior runner, competed in all eight competitions in the fall and is majoring in Mathematics while Beckett, also a senior, teamed with Tiffani Foster for six doubles wins for the tennis team and is majoring in Political Science. Geegan, a junior middle blocker, recorded 310 kills and 129 blocks for the volleyball team and is majoring in Early Childhood Education while Lewis, also a junior, averaged 11.4 points per game as a forward on the basketball team and is majoring in Psychology. Weidert, a junior swimmer, finished third in the 200 individual medley, fourth in the 200 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 breaststroke at the Horizon League meet and is majoring in Modern Languages.
This award has been named after Dr. Carl Benner, who was chair of the Athletic Council and long-time official scorer for the basketball team.
The Terry Hall WSU Coach of the Year award was presented to men's basketball coach Brad Brownell, who led the Raiders to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1993. He was also named the District 10 Coach of the Year by the NABC as Wright State finished 23-10 and won the Horizon League title. The award is named in honor of former women's basketball coach Terry Hall, who passed away in 1997.
The department's Angelo "Tony" Tononi Raider Award, given to someone who has contributed above and beyond, was presented to Mike Zink who has served as Wright State's Equipment & Facilities Supervisor for many years and has been involved with the university and athletic department since its inception. This award has been named after Tony Tononi, a friend and booster who passed away five years ago.
Other awards included the department's Life SKILLS Award for community service, which was presented to Whitney Lewis of the women's basketball team.
