The Wright State women's soccer team played a scoreless first half against Jacksonville State in their opening game of the 2007 Wright State Classic, but in the second half the offense found it stride. The Raiders rode the right foot of Amy Miller as she recorded a hat trick in the contest to lead WSU to a 3-1 victory.
The Raiders took control in the first half with a ten shot outburst and forced JSU keeper Kate Kelly to make eight saves. The WSU defense limited JSU to only four shots, with Raider keeper Meghan Hackerson making three saves.
In the second half the Raiders attack forced JSU into some one-on-one situations, one that resulted in a foul in the penalty box. The penalty shot was taken by Miller, the Raiders leading scorer in 2006, and she sent it into the back of the net to push WSU to a 1-0 lead at the 49:52 mark.
Just three minutes later, the Raiders were on the attack again and freshman Amber Kasmer sent a one-touch pass to Miller at the top of the penalty box. Miller took one dribble and sent a shot past the JUS netminder for her second goal of the match.
Then at the 55:51 mark, Miller struck again on a penalty kick after a JSU foul in the box. Miller drilled the kick into the lower left hand corner to push WSU's lead to 3-0.
JSU would add a goal in the 72nd minute when Kaitlyn MacLellan sent a free kick from 20 yards out into the back of the net.
In the game WSU outshot the Gamecocks 19-8 and forced the JSU keeper to make 12 saves. Hackerson allowed only one goal in her debut in net for the Green and Gold, making five saves, and recorded her first collegiate victory.
Earlier in the evening Evansville defeated Austin Peay 2-1 in the opening match of the 2007 Wright State Classic. Mia Tofano and Heidi Grey each tallied goals for UE, while Ashley Beck scored the first goal of the match for APSU.
The Raiders are now 1-0 this season, recording their first season opening win since 2003, and will square off with Austin Peay in the finale of the Wright State Classic on Sunday, September 2. The action will kick off with Jacksonville State, coached by WSU soccer alum Julie Davis, taking on Evansville at Noon. WSU and APSU will take to the pitch at 2:30.
