The Wright State women's soccer team locked up a bye in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament with a 2-0 victory at Youngtown State Friday afternoon. The Green and Gold used a pair of second half goals to claim the win and that, coupled with a Valparaiso victory over Butler, locked up the #2 seed for WSU at the 2009 league summit.
The Raiders held the edge in shots in the opening frame with a 7-3 edge, forcing YSU keeper Mariah Snyder to make three saves in the opening 45 minutes.
WSU continued to apply the pressure in the second half as Lori Anderson got the Raiders on the board in the 48th minute when she struck with her second goal of the season. The junior took headed home a served ball from fellow classmate Trisha Stevens to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead at the 48:26 mark.
Megan Bush added to the Raiders lead at the 61:27 mark when she collected her second goal of the 2009 campaign. I'esha King served a ball into the 18-yard box that Amber Kasmer touched and Bush finished. It was the first career assist for King, who redshirted last season, and gave WSU a 2-0 advantage.
The second place finish is the highest for a Wright State squad since the Raiders captured their only regular season championship in 1999. With the victory, the Green and Gold have won 10+ matches during each of the past five seasons and this seasons senior class can match the school record for wins in a career (46, 2005-08) with a victory in their regular season finale. The five wins in Horizon League play tie the school standard set by the 2007 squad that posted a 5-2-1 mark during their league slate.
Wright State (10-6-2, 5-2 Horizon) closes out the regular season on Sunday, October 25, with a 1:00 match at Detroit.
