For the first time since October 24, 2007, the Wright State women's soccer team won an overtime match, capturing a 1-0 decision in the 103rd minute at Longwood Sunday afternoon. Amber Kasmer connected on her first goal of the season, while goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson posted six saves to extend the Raiders winning streak to six matches.
The Raiders held the shot advantage in each half during regulation, holding a 4-3 edge in the first half and a 5-4 edge in the second half. WSU forced Kyra Byron to make three saves in each of the first two periods, while holding a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
In the 56th minute, Longwood would have a chance to take the lead when the Raiders were called for a foul inside the penalty box. Kacie Oliver teed up the penalty kick, but Hackerson was up to the test in net and made the save to keep the match scoreless.
After WSU held a 5-2 edge in shots in the first overtime, Amber Kasmer would connect on the first WSU shot of the second extra period. The golden goal came at the 103:38 mark when Kasmer collected a pass from Jen Agueci – who collected her second assist on the season – and beat the Longwood keeper to the far post for her 21st career marker.
It was the first overtime victory for the Raiders since October 24, 2007, when the Green and Gold topped Valparaiso at home 1-0. The last road overtime win for the women's squad came in the same season as WSU collected a 2-1 overtime win at Bowling Green.
The six-match winning streak ties the school record set in three separate seasons, including during the 2006 slate under head coach Pat Ferguson. The 1988 and 1986 squads also posted six straight victories. The Raiders have compiled an 8-1-2 record since starting the 2009 slate 0-3-0.
Hackerson made six saves to post her fifth blanking of the season now sits alone in second on the all-time shutouts list with 20. The 21st career goal for Kasmer moves her into a tie for seventh on the career goals scored list with former teammate Amy Miller and is just six goals away from cracking the top-five.
Wright State (8-4-2) returns to action on Sunday, October 11, versus league opponent Butler. The Green and Gold are scheduled for a 1:00 kickoff versus the Bulldogs at Alumni Field in their final home match of the 2009 season.
