Women Fall to Valparaiso in Horizon League Semifinals

The Wright State women's soccer team hadn't allowed a Horizon League opponent to score two goals all season, but on Friday evening at Milwaukee's Engelmann Field, the Raiders dropped a 2-1 decision to Valparaiso in the Horizon League Tournament semifinals.
Valparaiso struck with the opening goal of the match in the 29th minute when Brooke Henderson headed in a corner kick to give VU the early lead. The Raiders would match Valpo with seven shots in the opening frame, with WSU keeper Meghan Hackerson collecting three saves.
The Crusaders opened the scoring in the second half, too, when Henderson played a ball into the 18-yard box and Jessie White finished to the far post to extend the lead to 2-0.
WSU would get on the board in the 63rd minute when senior Nicole Amador struck with her first goal of the season. The California native finished off a high ball played into the box from Jen Agueci to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Green and Gold would have three more scoring chances, but Valparaiso goalie Mele Cabral grabbed two saves and the final shot of the match from Lori Anderson sailed high over the crossbar. VU held a 15-12 edge in shots and took the only two corner kicks of the match.
Wright State finished the season with an 11-7-2 record – their fifth consecutive 10+ win season – and set a school standard for wins in Horizon League play with six victories. The senior class of Amador, Megan Bush and Kristi Brendlinger will leave WSU as tied with the 2008 class as the winningest senior classes in school history with 46 victories.
