The Wright State softball team won a pair of games at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial in Kennesaw, Georgia, Friday, defeating Tennessee Tech 5-3 and then pulling out a 1-0 thriller over host Kennesaw State.
In the Tennessee Tech game, WSU opened the scoring with a run in the first. After loading the bases on hits from Louie Haney and Justine Shilt followed by a Kristen Bradshaw walk, Allison Cox delivered a single to left to plate Haney.
The Raiders extended the margin to 4-0 with three more runs in the second. Singles from Briauna Birl and Haney along with a Jamie Perkins walk loaded the bases for Bradshaw, who drove in all three runners with a hit to right center.
Birl accounted for the final Wright State run in the fourth as she singled, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a bad throw as Malerie Klingler reached on an infield hit.
Tennessee Tech picked up a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but would get no closer as Sharon Palma (2-1) held on for the victory, scattering nine hits while striking out three over 6.1 innings of work. Ashleigh Jackson picked up the save as she recorded the final two outs, including one strikeout.
In the second game of the day, Jackson and Kennesaw State's Jessica Cross hooked up in quite a pitcher's duel, with the Raiders pushed across the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh.
WSU posed the first scoring threat in the second as Cox walked and, one out later, Katie Kine hit a double to right center, but Cox was thrown out at the plate on the plate and the threat ended on a groudout. Klair Wells then tripled for the Owls with two outs in the third, but was stranded there as Jackson induced a groundout.
In the seventh, China Frost singled on the first pitch to left and Jackson followed with a double down the left field line to plate Frost with the game-winner.
Jackson (1-2) allowed just four hits in pitching the shutout, striking out seven while walking two.
Wright State (3-3) wraps up play at the Rafter Memorial Saturday with two more games as the Raiders wrap up the round-robin portion of the tournament with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 10:30, with the championship game set for 6:00.
