The Wright State softball team swept its final two games of the Comfort Inn Softball Classic in Morehead, Kentucky, Sunday, winning 3-0 over Oakland followed by a 7-2 decision over Dayton.
WSU picked up a run in the second inning against the Golden Grizzlies as Justine Shilt walked, moved up to second as Lindsay Barrett reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Allison Cox's double to left center.
The Raiders rounded out the scoring with two in the fourth after the first two batters had been retired. Mollie Berry started the rally by reaching on infield hit and scored as Jamie Perkins doubled down the left field line. Briauna Birl followed with a double of her own along the left field line to plate pinch-runner Michelle Baker.
Sharon Palma (3-3) scattered eight hits in pitching the complete-game shutout, striking out eight and walking none. Offensively, Berry, Birl and Louie Haney each had two hits.
It took just one pitch for Wright State to get on the scoreboard against Dayton as Perkins smacked a solo home run to center, her first of the season. The Flyers, though, took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run double by pinch-hitter Lyndsi Gocken.
That lead, however, was shortlived as the Raiders responded with three runs in the top of the third. With one out, Berry reached on an infield hit, advanced to second on a throwing error and went to third on a groundout. Birl singled up the middle to knock in Berry and scored on a Haney double. One pitch later, Kristen Bradshaw doubled to the gap in left center to drive in Haney with the third run.
WSU tacked on three more runs in the fourth as after Barrett and Katie Kine singled and Perkins was intentionally walked, Birl delivered a triple to left to clear the bases and extend the Raider lead to 7-2.
Ashleigh Jackson (4-3) struck out four in five innings to earn the victory while Palma retired all six batters she faced in going the final two frames. Perkins, Birl and Kine each had two hits to pace the offense.
Wright State (8-9) returns to action next weekend at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina. On Friday, March 13, the Raiders face Western Kentucky at 1:00 followed by Belmont at 5:00 while on Saturday, March 14, WSU takes on Pittsburgh at 1:00 and North Carolina A&T at 5:00.
