It's obvious to many who try to talk to Amber Kasmer that she is a quiet individual who doesn't say much. When she's out on the soccer field, however, it's almost as though there is a different person running plays and conversing with teammates.
"I feel that I talk a lot on the field. It's different out there," said Kasmer.
By different, the senior means that she wants to do everything it takes to win.
So far, this season it has been hard to miss just how big of a role Kasmer plays on the team. So far, this season Kasmer has played in all 12 games and is tied for the team lead in goals (4) and is second in assists (3). In the past, she has been dominant in those two statistical categories as well.
In her inaugural college season in 2007, Kasmer led the team in goals (12), points (29), shots (57), shots on goal (31) and match winning goals (5). It was a similar story in 2008 when she was on top of those same categories.
The result of those first two seasons was an armful of awards, including being named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year in 2007 and being selected as a member of the All-Horizon League First Team in both 2007 and 2008.
Last season, though, was a bit different. Kasmer missed out on those awards and referred to 2009 as "one of those seasons". Now, she's trying to redeem herself this season and put herself and the team back on top of the Horizon League.
"Over the summer I worked harder," said Kasmer. "I feel like my freshmen and sophomore year just kind of came to me, but last year never did. So this year I have to stay positive and just keep working. I have to stay in the mindset that I can do it."
"I keep telling myself that it will come and I feel that as a team we are getting better every day in practice," added Kasmer. "Just work hard and see what will come from all the practice."
When it comes down to it, the awards mean little to Kasmer when compared to accomplishing her ultimate goal of making the NCAA Tournament. It's about the only thing she hasn't accomplished since coming to Wright State.
With the few words that Kasmer does say off the field, she makes it known what her goals are and what she really wants to accomplish as a soccer player at Wright State.
"Make it to the NCAA tournament by far. In the end, I want to win," Kasmer said. "I want to do well. I wouldn't mind getting an award if I could get one, but I'm not going to get that award if my team isn't doing well. I'm not going to score if my team isn't getting the ball to me. So I want to win."
