Women Tie at Valparaiso
10/23/2011 4:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
An Allie Metzler goal with 2:35 remaining in regulation resulted in a 2-2 tie for the women's soccer team at Valparaiso Sunday afternoon.
Bekah Bonny gave the Raiders a quick 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the contest as she tallied a goal from the middle of the box off a cross by I'esha King from the right side. It was the sixth goal of the season for Bonny and the second assist for King.
Valparaiso (8-6-3, 4-2-1 Horizon), though, answered right back with a goal to tie the score at the seven-minute mark and the Crusaders went up 2-1 with another score at the 35:32 mark of the first half.
It stayed that way until the 87:25 mark of the second half when Metzler scored her first collegiate goal, a header off a free kick by Brittany Persaud. The assist was Persaud's ninth of the year and 22nd of her career. She now becomes WSU's all-time leader in that category, eclipsing the 21 set by Debbie Dunn and JoAnne Paxton, who both played for the Raiders from 1988-91.
Neither team attempted a shot in the first overtime and even though Wright State outshot Valparaiso 4-1 in the second overtime, the match ended as a tie.
WSU finished with a 20-16 shot advantage overall and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Wright State (8-6-3, 3-2-2 Horizon) closes out the regular season on Friday, October 28, as the Raiders host Cleveland State at 7:00. A WSU win guarantees a home game in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament on Tuesday, November 1.
