Freshman pitcher Krystian DeWitt is off to a strong start in her collegiate career.
A native of Garden Grove, California, DeWitt was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on February 14. In her collegiate debut against Austin Peay at the Belmont Hampton Inn-Brentwood Tournament in Columbia, Tennessee. DeWitt pitched five innings, striking out six, while giving up one unearned run and one walk.
"I was really nervous in my first start, but my teammates helped me," said DeWitt. "They played so well behind me when I was pitching, it made me comfortable out on the field and I didn't have much to worry about."
In her second start versus IUPUI, DeWitt pitched a complete game shutout with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. In four starts this season overall, DeWitt has a 2-2 record with an earned run average of 2.58, two complete games and 12 strikeouts.
Krystian comes to Wright State from the Pacifica Mariners of the Empire League. In her senior season, DeWitt went 22-7, with 174 strikeouts and a .085 earned run average in 181.2 innings. She currently holds the Pacifica Mariners record for strikeouts in a single game with 18, as well as tallying a 13 game winning streak. The three-time Orange County All-Star was named league MVP as a senior.
"I love Wright State because this is a different environment and I wanted to try something new," said DeWitt. "When I came on my visit, the girls were so nice and they made me feel so welcome and they really wanted me to come here."
Krystian feels plenty optimistic about the 2011 season and first year Head Coach Lynn Curylo.
"We have faith in Coach Curylo," said DeWitt. "She pushes you really hard and to your limit, and in the end I think it'll be worth it."
DeWitt's strengths of pitching location and movement will immediately benefit the Raiders and she also excels in the field as her Mariners teammates named her team defensive MVP last season.
"Wright State is really dedicated, you can just tell how much they love playing softball and I like surrounding myself with people who love the sport as much as I do," said DeWitt.
DeWitt traveled from the west coast to get here and that kind of determination should excite Raider fans about another successful season of WSU softball.
