Senior Emilie Fillion scored the golden goal 2:55 into overtime as the Wright State women's soccer team defeated Youngstown State 1-0 in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament Tuesday night at Stambaugh Stadium.
A year ago, after losing the regular-season finale to Cleveland State 2-1, WSU was the #5 seed in the tournament and defeated the Vikings 1-0 in the first round en route to reaching the championship match.
History repeated itself in 2012, this time against another Northeast Ohio team, as the #5 seed Raiders lost the regular-season finale to Youngstown State 2-1 in overtime on Saturday, only to bounce back with Tuesday's win.
Fillion recorded the golden goal with 7:05 remaining in the first overtime as she took a shot off a rebounded save into the open net. It was the sixth goal of the season for the senior forward.
WSU led 16-9 in shots, including 11-6 after halftime, while junior goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy posted her seventh complete shutout of the season, recording three saves.
Wright State (8-4-6) will look to repeat history again on Friday as the Raiders face #2 seed Detroit in the semifinals at Englemann Stadium in Milwaukee, starting at 5:00 Eastern. WSU and the Titans met in the semifinals last season in Milwaukee, with Wright State winning 3-2.
