Softball Drops Pair at Cleveland State

The Wright State softball team found the offense hard to come by Saturday in dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Cleveland State, falling 2-1 in the first game and 6-2 in the nightcap.
In the opener, it was a pitcher's duel between WSU's Krystian DeWitt and CSU's Sara Shields as the game was scoreless until the Vikings tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Raiders attempted a rally with two outs in the seventh as Chelsea Archer doubled to center and Kortney Tackett drove her in with a single to right, but Shields induced a fly out to end the game.
Both DeWitt and Shields gave up five hits while striking out eight.
A Salena Kauffman grand slam gave Cleveland State a 4-0 lead in the second inning of game two, only to see Wright State cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the fourth. An Archer walk, a Colleen Schneider hit to left and a wild pitch set the stage for Alex Machen, who delivered a two-run double to center.
WSU, however, would get no closer as the Vikings scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and the Raiders managed just one baserunner over the final three innings.
Wright State (15-20, 5-4 Horizon) is right back in action on Monday, April 9, as the Raiders host crosstown rival Dayton (14-19) for a 3:00 doubleheader.
