Wright State clinched the #2 seed for next week's Horizon League Tournament with a sweep of Cleveland State Saturday at the WSU Softball Field, taking the opener 9-2 before rallying for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
The Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the opener on a RBI single by Kortney Tackett in the second and on a double by Libby Pfeffer in the third to drive in Jess Gorman, only to see Cleveland State tie the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
It stayed that way until WSU exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. A Hanna Floyd single drove in Kacie Rapshus with the go-ahead run and Gorman doubled in two runs to make it 5-2. Libby Pfeffer plated another run with a hit and after Taylor Knore had a two-run double, Rapshus rounded out the scoring with a RBI single to left.
Krystian DeWitt (10-11) allowed one earned run and four hits in a complete-game effort, striking out five. At the plate, Gorman, Knore, Rapshus and Tackett each had two hits.
The Vikings went in front in game two with a run in the fourth before the Raiders answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Libby Pfeffer doubled to left center and Rapshus drove her in with a hit to center.
Nena Doran put Cleveland State back in front in the fifth with a two-run home run to left, but that lead was short-lived as Wright State took the lead for good with three in its half of the fifth.
With one out, Angie Clark walked and went to second on a Gorman hit. Reagan Stofcheck then singled along the left field line to drive in Clark and a wild throw on the play allowed Gorman to score and Stofcheck to go to third. Pfeffer then had a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Stofcheck and make it 4-3.
Cleveland State posed a threat in the seventh with a walk and single with one out, but Montana Wear (7-16) preserved the victory by getting the final two batters to ground out. Wear struck out six in a complete-game effort.
With the two wins and Green Bay sweeping a doubleheader from Valparaiso on Saturday, the Phoenix will be the #1 seed and host for next week's Horizon League Tournament while the Raiders will be the #2 seed.
Wright State (17-30, 12-6 Horizon) closes out the regular season Sunday with the final game of the series against Cleveland State starting at noon.
