The Wright State softball team had the potential tying runs on base in the bottom of the seventh, but could not push them across as Dayton held on for a 3-1 decision Wednesday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field.
It was a scoreless pitcher's duel between WSU's Montana Wear and UD's Gabrielle Snyder until the Flyers tallied two runs in the fourth as Jaclyn Kweder reached on an error and Tiffany Ricks followed with her sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center.
Dayton added another run in the fifth as Kweder's infield hit plated Kennedy Haynes, who started the frame with a single and moved up to third on a Natalie Mariano hit and a Kathryn Hess sacrifice.
The Raiders cut the deficit to 3-1 in their half of the fifth as Hanna Floyd led off with a triple to the gap in right center and scored on an Angie Clark sacrifice fly to right.
WSU stranded a runner on third in the sixth and had a two-out rally in the seventh as Clark reached second on an error and Alexis Mayle was hit by a pitch, but could not get any closer as Macey Gunther hit into a force play to end the contest.
Becka Peterson finished with two hits for Wright State (7-24), who returns to Horizon League play this weekend as the Raiders host Youngstown State in a three-game series starting with a single game Friday at 5:00.
