Competitive Swimming Schedule Set
6/11/2015 4:00:00 AM | Swimming & Diving
The Wright State men's and women's swimming & diving program has released its 2015-16 schedule. The new slate features competitions against nationally-ranked programs such as Notre Dame, Louisville, Virginia Tech and Ohio State.
The 2014-15 season saw much improvement for the Raiders. The men had a dual meet record of 6-1, losing only at an experienced Ohio State squad. The women made competitive improvements and secured a dual meet win over conference-rival Cleveland State for the first time in half a decade. Both teams were significantly improved at the Horizon League Championships with the men placing third after a sixth-place performance the year before and the women moving up to fifth from seventh in 2014.
On an individual level, the team's achievements were arguably the best of any year in recent memory. Combined they established nine new pool records, 13 new school records, achieved 11 NCAA provisional standards, had two Horizon League Champions and two qualifiers for the United States Summer Nationals.
“We're pleased about the progress we've made as a team, but not satisfied,” WSU head coach Kyle Oaks said. “I think a big part of our improvement has come from this mentality--we want to be a nationally-recognized program, and working toward that goal has been a tremendous driving force for our efforts.”
The upcoming 2015-16 schedule will certainly provide some new challenges and opportunities for the Raider squads. They will return a strong group of upperclassmen led by men's seniors Csongor Bajnoczki, Wiehan Boshoff, Matt Dassow, Nathan Meyer, Luke Osgood, Alfred Pappe, Clement Quilliec, and Merritt Sparks, as well as the women's seniors Alyssa Athmer, Kayla Fearrin, Ashley Miller, Samantha Miller, and Samantha TenEyck. With the addition of 12 newcomers, the team will be poised to continue its trend of growth and improvement, but they will also face some very high levels of competition.
“As I've said, we're pleased about the progress, but we want more,” Oaks said. “Our returners, the incoming student-athletes, and our schedule are going to help us get there. You can't expect to be considered a top-tier swimming and diving program until you start to treat yourself like you deserve to be a part of that conversation. Ultimately, you have to hold yourself accountable for what it is going to take to get there.”
“Having the opportunity to compete against such tremendous programs next year is going to be very tough for us, and it may impact our wins column. Regardless of our dual meet record, this schedule will provide us great experience as we move forward with our long-term performance plan of achieving high standards at the Horizon League Championships and reaching the NCAA National Meet.”
The Raiders will celebrate the start of the regular season on September 26 when they host the annual Green vs. Gold Intersquad competition at 9 am.
