The Wright State softball team scored four runs in the first three innings, but had to hold off a late Dayton rally to defeat the Flyers 4-3 Tuesday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.

The Raiders tallied a run in the first as Libby Pfeffer doubled in Honnah Susor, who reached on an error and went to second on a Macey Gunther grounder. WSU then made it 2-0 in the second on a RBI single by Savanna Brown.

Dayton cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the second, only to see Wright State answer with two in the top of the third. With one out, Gunther singled, went to second on a passed ball and scored as Pfeffer doubled to the fence in center. Vivi Marquez followed with a single to left to plate Pfeffer and increase the lead to 4-1.

The Flyers, though, scored a run in the third and it stayed 4-2 until scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk with two outs. Madi Maloof then hit a sharp grounder between first and second in an attempt to tie or possibly win the game, but Pfeffer came up with a diving stop and threw out Maloof at first to end the contest.

Pfeffer finished with two hits and two RBI to pace the Raider offense.

Wright State (4-13) and Dayton (12-12) meet again on Wednesday, this time at the WSU Softball Field in the home opener for the Raiders. The game was originally set for 6:00, but has been moved up to 4:00 due to a cold forecast.
