The Wright State women's soccer team was in action once again Wednesday night, as they traveled to Youngstown State to battle with the Penguins in a Horizon League tilt. The Raiders came into the match tied for third place in the Horizon League, while the Penguins were still in search of their first conference victory on the year. WSU won the game 3-1 and are now 6-6-2 and 5-1-1.
First Half
The Raiders wasted no time asserting their dominance in the match, as just 11 minutes into play, Mattie Cutts netted her third goal of the season off of an Aaliyah Patten assist to open the scoring on a cold night in northeast Ohio. Cutts would not be satisfied with just the one goal, however, as just 66 seconds later, she found a rebound in the box and slotted her fourth of the season into the lower right portion of the net, giving the Raiders a 2-0 lead. 11 minutes after Cutts' second tally of the match, Aaliyah Patten joined the scoring party, adding her fourth of the campaign to run the score to a commanding 3-0 lead, where it would remain at the end of the first half.
Second Half
The Raiders came out in the second half with a decidedly defensive focus to their play, looking to maintain the substantial lead they acquired in the first half of play. In the 77th minute, Youngstown State's Lauren Dolak would put the Penguins on the board, scoring her team's sixth goal of the season beating Maddie Jewell from 25 yards out on a well-placed shot. The Raiders would take only two shots in the second half, but wouldn't need to score any more goals, as they would go on to win by a final score of 3-1.
Up Next
The Raiders will round out their short two-match road trip this Saturday, when they travel to Cleveland State to face the Vikings. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 pm Saturday, and live stats can be found on wsuraiders.com. Live streaming will not be available for Saturday's contest. With the Vikings losing tonight against Detroit Mercy, Saturday's contest could determine sole possession of second place, with the two teams currently tied for second with 16 points.
