The Wright State women's soccer team played its final match of the regular season on a cold, rainy Friday night when Detroit Mercy came to Alumni Field for a 7:00 pm kick-off. Prior to the match, the women's soccer team's six student athletes were honored in a ceremony with head coach Patrick Ferguson, Athletic Director Bob Grant, and Associate Athletic Directors Trevor Doll and Joylynn Brown.
First Half
The weather was a major factor throughout the match Friday evening, with a steady rain falling the entire match, coupled with winter-like temperatures. The match got off to a slow start, with 11 minutes elapsing before the match's first shot was recorded; a long shot from a free kick by Livi Raflik that sailed narrowly over the crossbar from 25 yards out. The first frame was largely uneventful, with just five shots combined between the two teams. After 45 minutes of play, the Raiders and Titans were scoreless.
Second Half
The Titans started the second half on the front foot offensively, launching an early cluster of shots on the Raiders' net. Maddie Jewell was forced to make three saves early in the second frame, but she was equal to the task, including an incredible diving save in the 52nd minute that was tipped off the crossbar. The Raiders got a couple high quality chances in the middle of the second frame, as Destiny Johnson's shot on a half-breakaway sailed over the crossbar, and Jordyne Helinski's volley attempt struck the crossbar from 15 yards out. The second half wound down, as the rain continued to fall at Alumni Field, and the two teams headed into overtime.
Overtime
The Raiders led off the first overtime with a few corner kicks, with their best chance coming off a lobbed shot from Raflik, which was tipped over the crossbar by Titans goalkeeper Marina Manzo. In the second overtime period, Mattie Cutts sent Aaliyah Patten streaking, but her shot from 18 yards out flew just over the crossbar in the 101st minute. In the 106th minute, a long shot from Nasreen Kobeissi beat Maddie Jewell to the far post and into the back of the net, giving the Titans the victory and securing their place in the Horizon League Tournament.
Up Next
With the win on Friday coupled with an IUPUI loss and an NKU victory, the Raiders and Titans will meet again in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Tournament on Monday at Alumni Field. The match is set to kick-off at 7:00 pm, and will be carried live on ESPN+.
