McGuinness nets late goal in tie against Purdue Fort Wayne

DAYTONKatie McGuinness netted her first collegiate goal in the 89th minute, helping the Wright State women's soccer program to a 1-1 tie against Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Raiders (6-5-3, 3-1-3 HL) and Purdue Fort Wayne (7-2-5, 3-0-3 HL) both collected a point to remain in a tie for second place in the Horizon League standings.

WSU held substantial advantages in total shots (24-10), shots on goal (11-7), and corner kicks (7-2) in the draw. Marcella Sizer paced the attack with five shots, including two on goal and one on a penalty kick opportunity. Lauren Borchert and Ashley Vaughn added four shots apiece.

Despite consistent pressure offensively, the Raiders were held scoreless for almost the entirety of the match. WSU finally broke through in the 89th minute, as McGuinness headed in the game-tying goal off assists by Michelle Rings and fellow newcomer Kaylee Pham

Tied at 1-all, Josie Krupp fired a shot on goal with just 30 seconds remaining. However, PFW goalkeeper Samantha Castaneda preserved the draw with her 10th and final save of the game.

Jessika Seward also stayed busy in goal for the Raiders with five saves, including a pair in the last 15 minutes of action.

The Raiders will return to action on Thursday, October 13, at Robert Morris for their second-to-last regular season road game.
