DAYTON — The Wright State women's soccer program took down Central Michigan 3-0 in its home opener on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
WSU (3-1) earned its second-straight shutout in the victory over the Chippewas (0-4), which marked the first time since 2017 the Raiders had achieved the feat against two Division I opponents.
Wright State tallied a season-high 17 shots, including 12 on goal. The trio of
Maddie Mitchell,
Lauren Borchert, and
Annika Samborski connected on their first goals of the season, while
Michelle Rings,
Marcella Sizer, and
Mariella Hartmann tallied an assist apiece.
The defense stood out by limiting Central Michigan to a mere five shots overall and none in the second half. Goalkeeper
Jessika Seward tallied three saves, all in the first half, en route to her third collegiate shutout.
WSU also showed off its depth with a season-high 22 individuals receiving playing time in the win.
The Chippewas were at their best in the opening 20 minutes of the non-conference matchup, tallying five shots overall and three on frame. Wright State recovered from the slow start, as Mitchell found the back of the net off a corner kick and assists from Rings and Sizer. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Raiders for the remainder of the first half.
Wright State boosted its advantage to 2-0 at the 57-minute mark thanks to an unassisted strike off the foot of Borchert. Samborski put the match away in the 82nd minute with her first collegiate goal off a pass from Hartmann.
The Raiders will return to action on Thursday, September 1, at Butler.
