Cross Country teams picked fifth in Horizon League Preseason Poll

INDIANAPOLIS — Both the Wright State men's and women's cross country teams were picked fifth in the 2022 Horizon League preseason coaches poll, the conference office announced Wednesday.Â
The Raider men tallied 83 points, while the women's team finished with 75 points. The league's 11 head coaches voted on the poll.Â
IUPUI topped the men's poll with 119 points and nine first-place votes, while Youngstown State was slotted in the second spot with 108 points and one first-place vote. Oakland (91) and Milwaukee (90) slightly edged Wright State in the top five. Selected to finish in the bottom five spots were Purdue Fort Wayne (72), Northern Kentucky (59), Detroit Mercy (47), Green Bay (45), and Robert Morris (36).
Oakland was projected to win the conference with 126 points and six first-place votes on the women's side. Milwaukee and Youngstown State tied for second with 117 points and two first-place votes apiece, followed by Purdue Fort Wayne in fourth with 82 points. IUPUI (74), Detroit Mercy (72), Northern Kentucky (70), Green Bay (43), Cleveland State (39), and Robert Morris (32) rounded out the poll behind the Raiders in fifth.Â
WSU turned in a pair of sixth-place team finishes at the 2021 Horizon League Championship. Abigail Halsey highlighted the meet by claiming the individual title in the women's 6,000-meter run race with a time of 22:10.6. Tayton Hess finished 14th overall in the men's 8,000-meter race to earn Second Team All-League honors as he led the Raider men with a time of 26:26.6.
The Raiders begin their 2022 schedule on Friday night when they host the Mike Baumer Country Classic at Fairborn Community Park. The night will start with the men's race at 6 p.m., followed by the women's race at 6:45 p.m. Baumer was a three-time national qualifier as a runner for the Raiders and then restarted Wright State's program in 1984, coaching through the 1989 season.
