
Remembering former Wright State coach Charlie Painter

Wright State Athletics is saddened by the passing of long-time women's tennis coach Charlie Painter, who passed away Thursday, March 16 at the age of 75.

Painter was the coach of the Wright State women's tennis program from 1989 through 1999, amassing 150 wins with the Raiders, the most of any Wright State tennis coach in program history, while also serving as the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament director. Painter was also named Wright State Coach of the Year in 1995.

One of the most accomplished coaches in the state of Ohio, Painter tallied 866 career wins as a tennis coach and was inducted into five Hall of Fames. In addition to tennis, he coached high school football for 15 years as well as 20 years of wrestling officiating and coaching. Painter was inducted into the Ohio Coaches Hall of Fame in 2019 and received the OHSAA Sportsmanship Ethics and Integrity Award in 2014. He won six GWOC Coach of the Year awards between boys and girls tennis and was selected as the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Midwest High School Coach of the Year in 2012.

Painter was the founder of the Miami Valley Tennis Coaches Association and served on the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association executive board. He was honored with the Mike Kelly/Don Donoher Coaching Award from the Dayton Agonis Club in 2018 and received the MVTCA/OTCA Lifetime Leadership award in 2022.

A 1969 graduate of Wittenberg University with a bachelor's degree in Physics and Mathematics, Painter played football and was a member of Wittenberg's national championship team as a freshman. He later earned his master's degree from Wright State University in Guidance and Counseling and had a 50-year career in education and taught at a number of schools in the Miami Valley, 25 of those years at Fairmont High School.
