Sarka’s career night not enough in loss to Dayton

DAYTON — Goalkeeper Kiera Sarka tallied a career-high 14 saves in Wright State's 3-0 loss against Dayton on Sunday night at Alumni Field.

The Raiders dropped to 1-3-2 on the season and will return to action next Sunday against Akron in a 1 p.m. first kick at Alumni Field.

Sarka's save total was the sixth-most by a Division I goalkeeper this season and the highest mark by a Raider since Maddie Jewell's 14 saves against Milwaukee (11/2/17) during the 2017 campaign. Two of Sarka's 14 saves transpired on penalty kick attempts.

Wright State ended the night with deficits in total shots (30-8), shots on goal (17-4), and corner kicks (4-0). Lauren Borchert recorded team-leading marks in overall shots (3) and shots on goal (2), while Marina Ruthsatz and Elise Canter added a shot on frame.

The Raiders entered the halftime break in a scoreless tie. Sarka compiled seven of her 14 total saves in the first half, highlighted by a diving penalty kick save in the fourth minute. The Flyers (4-0-1) fired 10 shots in the 45-minute span, while WSU had four shots, including strikes on frame by Ruthsatz and Borchert.

Dayton came out firing with two goals in the opening five minutes of the second half. UD's Laney Huber found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 47th minute. Noel Blain followed with a goal off a feed from Madison Wilson at the 49-minute mark.

The Raiders threatened to reach the scoreboard in the 58th and 59th minutes as Canter and Borchert delivered strikes on goal. However, UD goalkeeper Batoul Reda garnered saves on both scoring opportunities.

Huber tallied her second goal of the night at the 62-minute mark, pushing Dayton's edge to 3-0. Wright State was limited to two off-target shots for the remainder of the match, sealing its first home loss of the year.

WSU's home meeting versus Akron on Sunday, September 10, will mark its final non-conference match before opening Horizon League play on Thursday, September 14, at Green Bay.
