Horizon League Member Institutions Declare Intent for House Settlement Opt In
3/10/2025 10:55:00 AM | General
INDIANAPOLIS/DAYTON - The Horizon League's 11 member institutions have declared their intent to opt in to the proposed House v. NCAA settlement which will impact the college athletics enterprise by providing universities a mechanism to provide direct financial support to student-athletes for use of their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), the League office announced on Monday.
Â
"The Division I model is modernizing and our members intend to be a player in this next chapter," Horizon League Commissioner Julie Roe Lach said. "We talk a lot about major experiences with leadership and by taking this step, our presidents, chancellors and athletics directors are putting critical pieces in place to continue to provide those experiences during this dynamic time in our industry."
Â
"Opting in to the settlement terms allows Wright State Athletics to remain competitive regionally and nationally," Wright State Director of Athletics Joylynn Brown added. "We will continue to prioritize the well-being and success of our student-athletes while delivering championship experiences. This decision allows us to leverage institutional resources strategically, invest in our programs, and create pathways for financial support beyond traditional NIL opportunities."
Â
The NCAA national office requested that all Division I institutions indicate their intent to opt in to the settlement while acknowledging that this is merely an intent, and not binding. The federal court hearing for final approval of the settlement is scheduled for April 7, 2025, and settlement terms, if approved, become effective July 1, 2025.
Â
If approved, the proposed settlement allows participating institutions to engage in direct name, image, and likeness (NIL) contracts with student-athletes in the form of a licensing agreement, endorsement deal and/or brand promotion agreement. Institutions opting-in will be subject to roster limits and team scholarship limitations will no longer apply.
The Horizon League is an NCAA Division I athletics conference comprised of 11 member institutions headquartered in Indianapolis. The League and our member schools develop nearly 4,000 student-athletes for life. Through unique opportunities in major metropolitan cities, their athletic, academic and personal aspirations can be achieved. Because what they learn today will inspire who they become tomorrow.
