WASHINGTON, D.C./DAYTON – The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has granted final approval to a settlement in the House v. NCAA ("House") litigation. This landmark settlement – agreed to by plaintiffs representing nearly 400,000 current and former student-athletes and the NCAA – will reshape the college sports landscape. It will pave the way for a model prioritizing fairness, stability, integrity, and opportunity for student-athletes and institutions.
"The approval of the NCAA House settlement marks a turning point for college athletics, and Wright State is prepared to move forward with clarity and purpose," Wright State Director of Athletics Joylynn Brown said. "As part of this new era, we are bringing NIL operations in-house to better streamline the process, allowing us to serve our student-athletes more effectively – both as individuals and within their programs. Our commitment to supporting all of our student-athletes remains unwavering and we will continue to help them succeed while embracing these changes. With Wright State Athletics on a strong upward trajectory, continued strategic support from our community ensures we keep building on recent success and meet this new era head on. We are proud to lead with integrity and adaptability as we navigate this evolving landscape together."
Wright State and the entire Horizon League membership originally declared their intent to opt in to the settlement in March.
"Approving the agreement reached by the NCAA, the defendant conference and student-athletes in the settlement opens a pathway to begin stabilizing college sports," stated NCAA President Charlie Baker. "This new framework that enables schools to provide direct financial benefits to student-athletes and establishes clear and specific rules to regulate third-party NIL agreements marks a huge step forward for college sports."
Overseeing this model will be the newly established College Sports Commission – an independent body that will be responsible for implementing the settlement terms governing revenue sharing, student-athlete Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals and roster limits. The Commission will investigate any potential violations of these rules, make determinations regarding potential rules violations and penalties, provide notice and opportunity to be heard, participate in the arbitration process and ultimately administer penalties for violations of these rules.
Under the new system, student-athletes will have more opportunities to financially benefit during their participation in intercollegiate athletics than ever before. Institutions are now able to share revenue directly with student-athletes, in addition to providing existing benefits such as athletic scholarships, access to world-class training facilities, academic counseling, medical care, post-eligibility medical coverage, mental health resources, nutritional guidance and life skills development.
