The Wright State volleyball team hit .270 the final three games and recorded 15 blocks overall as the Raiders defeated the Loyola Ramblers in Horizon League action Saturday afternoon at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, winning 22-30, 30-28, 30-24, 30-23.
Loyola broke away from a 15-12 lead in game one by scoring eight straight points, half of those coming on two Keily Zins kills and two Dana VanDiggelen blocks. WSU could get no closer than 26-20 the rest of the way.
Game two featured seven ties and three lead changes until three consecutive points, including a Lizzy Gunn kill, put Wright State in front at 16-14. The Ramblers eventually drew even at 28, but the Raiders evened the match on a Lindsey Frank tip and a Loyola attack error on game point.
WSU then trailed 10-9 in the third game before going on a 12-4 run, a run that featured four Raider blocks. The Raiders then used a 5-0 burst to take control early in game four and later led 29-18.
The victory was the first home win for Wright State over Loyola since a five-game decision on October 22, 1999.
Loyola had the advantage in kills 65-56, but Wright State countered by outhitting the Ramblers .199-.133 and collecting 15 blocks compared to five for Loyola.
Jenny Schultz recorded her third straight double-double and 13 of the season overall with 12 kills and 17 digs for the Raiders along with four blocks, while Becca Awaa tied a season-high with 11 kills as she hit .333 with three blocks and three service aces. Ironically, her other 11-kill performance in 2006 came at Loyola on September 22.
