The Wright State volleyball team recorded 15 blocks on the night, but it wasn't enough as the Green Bay Phoenix defeated the Raiders Friday night at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, winning 30-26, 30-23, 30-24.
WSU led 13-10 in game one after an attack error, but the Phoenix followed with a 10-3 run to go up 20-16. The Raiders drew to within two at 28-26 on a block from Becca Awaa and Lizzy Gunn, but could get no closer as Green Bay wrapped up the game on an Abby Bergsma kill and a Wright State attack error.
The Raiders again had the early lead in game two, jumping out to a 5-0 lead thanks in part to three Jenny Schultz kills, only to see Green Bay eventually tie the game at five and go up 20-13 after a Holly Visser kill. Wright State had a comeback of its own, scoring seven straight points to tie the game at 21, but the Phoenix went back in front on back-to-back Betty Slinger kills and opened up a 27-22 cushion on three consecutive Sarah Rauen kills.
Wright State tallied six unanswered points in the third game to take a 20-16 lead, two as a result of a block and a kill from Lindsey Frank. Green Bay, however, would rally back with seven straight of its own, including three more Visser kills and two Rauen aces, to make it 23-20. A Schultz kill and a Tara Geegan block cut the deficit to one, but a service error cut short the rally and the Phoenix closed the match with a 7-2 run.
WSU held a 15-8 advantage in blocks, but Green Bay still maintained a 46-28 margin in kills and had nine aces compared to five for the Raiders.
Schultz kept her double-double streak at eight alive as she led Wright State with 12 kills and 22 digs, giving her 18 altogether on the season. No other Raider, however, managed more than five kills.
Slinger finished with a triple-double of 10 kills, 27 assists and 10 digs for Green Bay (13-14, 7-6 Horizon), while Bergsma had 13 kills and Visser 10.
Wright State, now 14-15 overall and 8-5 in the Horizon League, concludes the regular season Saturday afternoon by welcoming in League leader Milwaukee for a 4:00 match. With a win, the Raiders would clinch the second seed in next weekend's Horizon League Tournament, which will also take place in the C.J. McLin Gymnasium.
