The Wright State volleyball team rallied back from a two-game deficit to defeat the South Florida Bulls at the USF Smoothie King Invitational Saturday afternoon in Tampa, winning 23-30, 24-30, 30-27, 30-16, 15-12.
South Florida was in control early as the Bulls hit .395 in the opening game and collected 15 kills in taking game two. USF then looked to be in position to win the match in three as the two teams were tied at 22.
Wright State, however, went up 24-22 on a South Florida attack error and a kill from Lexi Leonhard and held on for the win thanks in part to two kills each from Tara Geegan and Lindsey Frank.
After recording just 21 kills over the first two games, the Raiders nearly matched that in game three alone with 18 in hitting .417.
WSU followed that by dominating game four, hitting .320 with seven blocks, including six block assists from Lizzy Gunn, as South Florida committed 12 attack errors overall.
That forced a decisive fifth game and Wright State fell behind in the early stages, trailing 7-4 after an Ashley Reavis kill. Gunn, though, started the Raider comeback with a kill and two Bull hitting errors tied the game at 7.
The two teams were then tied on each of the next three points before WSU went up 12-10 on a Leonhard kill and a block from Alisha Kimbro and Geegan. South Florida cut the deficit to one on two occasions, but the Raiders had an answer each time and clinched the match on a Kimbro kill and an attack error on match point.
South Florida had the advantage in kills 67-56, but Wright State outhit the Bulls for the match .196-.130, including a .313-.072 differential over the final three games. The Raiders also recorded 17 blocks to just 7.5 for USF.
