Alisha Kimbro posted her fourth straight double-double, including a career-high 27 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Wright State volleyball team dropped a four-game Horizon League decision to Youngstown State Friday night at the Beeghly Center, falling 29-31, 35-33, 30-21, 34-32.
Wright State trailed 28-26 in game one following a Dana Leslie service ace, but rallied to tie the game at 28 on a Kimbro kill and a block from Lizzy Gunn and Becca Awaa. The Penguins went back in front with a kill, only to see the Raiders pull out the opening game win on kills from Kimbro and Gunn and an ace by Kimbro on game point.
WSU again rallied from a 28-26 deficit in the second game to go up 30-29 on a Kimbro kill and the Raiders later went ahead 33-32 following a YSU attack error, but could not come up with the winning point as Youngstown State scored the final three points to even the match.
The Penguins hit .500 to win game three, but Wright State looked to be in position to force a fifth game, leading 29-27 in game four after two straight YSU errors. Youngstown State, though, had consecutive kills to make it 29-all and despite Wright State reaching game point three more times on two Kimbro kills and one from Samantha Connor, the Penguins claimed the match by scoring the final three points.
Youngstown State outhit Wright State .249-.191 and held a 86-64 advantage in kills.
Kimbro finished with a career-high 27 kills in hitting .324 for the match and added 12 digs to post her fourth straight double-double. She also had four aces and three blocks.
Gunn added 11 kills with no errors as she hit .393 for the Raiders with six blocks, while Connor had 14 kills. Setter Lindsey Frank chipped in 51 assists and 20 digs while Lexi Leonhard had 21 digs and Lili Williams 11.
Three Penguins recorded 20 or more kills on the night and two finished with double-doubles in Jessica Fraley (23 kills, 22 digs) and Ebony Barbosa (23 kills, 17 digs). Ruth Boscaljon added 22 kills for Youngstown State (10-10, 4-5 Horizon).
Wright State, now 8-13 overall and 5-4 in the Horizon League, wraps up the Northeast Ohio swing Saturday afternoon with a 4:00 match at Cleveland State.
