Three Wright State players combined for 49 kills and 18 blocks Tuesday night as the Raiders controlled the final three games for a four-game decision over the Cincinnati Bearcats at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, winning 17-30, 30-23, 30-20, 30-19.
It was all Cincinnati in game one as the Bearcats jumped out to an 8-2 advantage, half of those coming on kills by Stephanie Niemer, and never looked back as UC outhit WSU .471-.212.
The Raiders, however, overcame a 9-8 deficit in game two with three straight points, including an Alisha Kimbro kill, and, from that point on, led throughout the rest of the match. Four straight points, two on kills from Kimbro and Samantha Connor, extended the Wright State lead to 15-10 and another 4-0 burst, capped off by a Lexi Leonhard service ace, made it 27-19.
WSU opened the third game with yet another 4-0 run, including two more Kimbro kills, and gradually pulled away from there as the Raiders outhit the Bearcats .441-.229 for the game.
The fourth game margin was just 16-13 until Wright State broke it open with a 9-4 run, which featured three Kimbro kills and two each by Connor and Shaunda Sandifer. The Raiders then closed out the match by scoring five of the final six points, including a kill and block from both Kimbro and Sandifer.
The win was the first for Wright State over Cincinnati since the Raiders won in four games at the McLin Gymnasium on September 26, 1995, snapping a seven-match losing streak to the Bearcats.
Wright State outhit Cincinnati for the match .306-.195, including a .333-.117 differential over the final three games, and also held a 14-5 block advantage.
Kimbro continued her strong play of late as she hit .327 with 24 kills and added nine digs and six blocks. Sandifer had her best match of her young Raider career as the freshman middle blocker hit .571 with 13 kills and only one error in 21 attempts to go along with 10 block assists.
Connor added a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs, Lindsey Frank 53 assists and seven digs and Leonhard 16 digs.
Four players recorded double figures in kills for Cincinnati (14-9), led by Jenny Custer with 13, Niemer and Jessie Nevitt with 12 each and Jessica Elley chipped in 10.
Wright State, now 10-14 on the season, returns to Horizon League play Friday at 7:00 as the Raiders head to Hinkle Fieldhouse to take on the Butler Bulldogs in WSU's final road match of the regular season. The next home action for the Raiders will be on Wednesday, October 31, as Wright State hosts crosstown rival and #17 ranked Dayton for another 7:00 match at the McLin Gymnasium.
